The clock keeps ticking . . .

It’s hard to believe it’s the middle of July! The summer is going so fast! When I was a child summer seemed to last forever. School usually let out during the last of May, and then did not start again until the first week of September. That was my summer.

I still remember those lazy mornings . . . My mother and father would leave for work between 6:00 and 7:00 o’clock, and then after a leisurely breakfast, I would wash the dishes, and do my chores. After that, I was free to read, or I could go outside, kick off my shoes and run barefoot through the grass. Or just sit in the warm sunshine and daydream until lunch time rolled around.

Now, however, summer seems so much shorter, and goes by so quickly. Here it is the middle of summer, and we’re already planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It’s not just summer, though, that’s on fast track. Today, all of life seems to be hastening on. We sort of plan our day according to what’s going on around us. If we work outside the home, our days are pretty well planned for us, but if we stay home, we may gauge our time by appointments we may have, or by the television. By those addictive soap operas we love to watch, such as, General Hospital, or As the World Turns. And then, we may count the hours until that favorite program or sitcom (American Idol, Seinfield, or Everybody Loves Raymond, for instance), comes on in the evening. We plan our time accordingly, and the days go by quickly.

But then something happens, such as the sudden and unexpected death of someone, that shocks us back to reality, back to the truth, that there is a God-given plan for life, and He is in control. And no matter how fast (or slow) life seems to be going, everything goes according to God’s plan.

God has set everything in motion, and the clock keeps ticking . . . not too fast, not too slow . . . but steadily onward. Just as He has planned.

Grace and peace to you,
Mary Emma
