. . . Speaking of signs
Have you ever noticed the plethora of signs along the highway as you travel into town, around town, down the road to the beach, or elsewhere?
Seems that signs have gotten to be so numerous along the roadside nowadays, it’s easy to take your eyes off the road ahead, and be distracted from your driving. If . . . you’re not careful.
And, the display doesn’t stop with streets and highways. Signs are everywhere! They tell us what to do, where to go, where we are, which car or refrigerator to buy, whom to vote for, and on and on. (At election time we cannot escape the many signs posted on neighborhood lawns and along the streets in town, all shouting the name of a hopeful politician, and his or her message . . . “Vote for me!”)
Some signs are necessary. They warn of danger, and tell us what to do . . . “signal ahead,” “sharp curve ahead,” “merge,” “yield,” etc. Others, perhaps, don’t seem as important. But there are countless signs that fill our lives and demand our attention day by day. Even in the spiritual realm.
Today I listened to one of my favorite preachers, Dr. David Jeremiah, who also spoke about signs—spiritual signs. Dr. Jeremiah’s message was entitled, “Unstoppable Shift.” His focus: signs of the end times, as described by Jesus in the Bible (Matthew 24), are all around.
Dr. Jeremiah reminded us of Jesus’ words when He said that these signs would continue—increasing in intensity and occurrence—and that we should pay attention. Jesus also said:
. . . Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender
and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.
Even so, when you see all these things, you know
that it is near, right at the door (Matthew 24:32-33 NIV).
I believe we would all agree that signs are important. They serve a special function in our lives, and we need to pay attention. Especially to those that help us keep our eyes on the—most important—road ahead.
May we have eyes to see, and ears to hear.
Grace and peace to you,
Mary Emma
